What is BOTOX®?
One of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the country, BOTOX® is an FDA-approved injectable compound that can reduce wrinkles by up to 80 percent. By blocking the release of acetylcholine, a chemical released by the skin's nerve cells that cause wrinkles, BOTOX®, or botulinum toxin type A, effectively eliminates the appearance of facial wrinkles around the eyes, forehead and/or mouth.
In addition, BOTOX® has been approved to treat a variety of other conditions, including:

How is BOTOX® Performed?
Before receiving BOTOX® in our Hattiesburg office, your face will be marked up to designate the treatment area. Keep in mind that the injection point may not be on the actual wrinkle itself, but where the muscle contracts. A numbing cream and antiseptic will be applied to minimize any discomfort. Then, a qualified member of Dr. Pecunia's staff will administer the BOTOX® through a series of small injections with a tiny needle just below the skin. The length of the procedure varies depending on the number of areas to be treated, but typically takes no more than 20 minutes.
Am I a Good Candidate for BOTOX®?
If you're looking to minimize the appearance of laughter lines, crow's feet and other wrinkles on the face, BOTOX® may be right for you. Most of our BOTOX® patients in Hattiesburg are men and women between the ages of 35 and 60. And the best candidates are those who have reasonably good skin tone without excessive sun damage.
It's also important to have realistic expectations of your results, as BOTOX® will not treat sagging, drooping or sun-damaged skin. If you are pregnant, nursing, have allergies to bovine products or local anesthetics, or have certain other medical conditions, you may not be a suitable candidate for botulinum toxin type A injections. Also, you should not rub your face for at least 12 hours after the injection. Any discomfort can be treated with over-the-counter pain medication, such as ibuprofen. But refrain from taking aspirin, as this could increase bruising of the treatment area.

BOTOX® is a quick and easy procedure that produces dramatic results. You'll start to see the full effects of BOTOX® within one week of the injections, and they usually last between three to six months.
