What is Lip Augmentation?
Although not everyone is blessed with full, sexy lips at birth, there are several lip augmentation procedures that can help. Fillers, fat transfers, and surgical implants all work to magnify the mouth area, turning wrinkled, thin lips into the perfect pout that you’ve always wanted. If you are interested in any of the lip augmentation procedures below, please contact the office of Dr. Richard A. Pecunia in Hattiesburg for more information or to schedule a consultation.
- Fillers: There are a variety of dermal fillers that can be used to plump your pout, including human-based collagen fillers, bovine-based collagen fillers, and hyaluronic acid-derived fillers. While they all strive to give the same results, each one has its own subtle differences. Human-based collagen fillers are biocompatible and may last for four months or more while bovine-based collagen strives to give more permanent results since it suspends polymethylmethacrylate microspheres that lodge in the lips even after the collagen dissipates. Hyaluronic acid-derived fillers such as Restylane® and Juvederm® boast longer-lasting results than their collagen-based competitors. These fillers are composed of a safe, clear gel containing a naturally occurring polysaccharide that already exists in the skin.
- Fat transfers: This type of lip augmentation often produces longer-lasting results than fillers. It is achieved by injecting your lips with fat cells that were extracted from your buttocks or another discreet area of your body. Results may be slightly unpredictable, depending on the technique used to prepare the transferred fat cells.
- Surgical options: Lip implants offer the most permanent results of all the lip augmentation procedures. The surgery involves inserting a synthetic implant through small incisions, typically at the corner of the lips. There are several implants to choose from, including Gore-Tex (made up of a biocompatible polymer material called ePTFE) and SoftForm (a circular, softer form of ePTFE).
