Male Breast Reduction / Gynecomastia in Hattiesburg, MS
Dr. Richard A. Pecunia offers male breast reduction to patients in Hattiesburg, Forrest County, Lamar County, and surrounding areas.
What Is Gynecomastia (Male Breast Reduction)?
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, gynecomastia, or localized fat and/or excess glandular tissue in the breasts, accounts for more than 65 percent of all male breast disorders. And while it’s not a serious medical problem, it can lead to embarrassment and insecurity for men in Mississippi and throughout the United States. If you’re suffering with this condition, consider having male breast reduction, or gynecomastia treatment, with Dr. Richard A. Pecunia. Male breast reductions can reconstruct the contour of the chest, restoring your self-confidence and eliminating the insecurity associated with gynecomastia.
As a plastic surgeon who is board certified to perform male breast reduction, Dr. Pecunia offers sensitive and compassionate care to gynecomastia patients. If you’re interested in learning more about male breast reductions, please contact our Hattiesburg office today to set up your individual consultation.
How Is Male Breast Reduction Performed?
Male breast reduction generally begins with an incision on the edge of the nipple or in the underarm area, cutting excess fat, tissue, and skin away. Frequently, men who undergo treatment for gynecomastia will require a blend of surgery and liposuction. If your breasts consist mostly of excess glandular tissue, Dr. Pecunia will cut the tissue out with a scalpel. However, if it’s mostly fatty tissue, liposuction will be used. The incision site will then be covered with a dressing, and you will be given a chest wrap to keep the skin in place.
Male breast reduction procedures typically take place in a doctor’s office, hospital, or surgical facility on an outpatient basis. The operation usually lasts about an hour and a half.
Am I a Good Candidate for Male Breast Reduction?
Before considering gynecomastia surgery, it’s important to make sure that your breast development has stabilized. In addition, if your enlarged breasts are caused by taking certain medications, steroids, or drugs, you may not be a good candidate for the procedure. Also, if you’re overweight or obese, Dr. Pecunia may recommend that you try to lose weight with diet and exercise before resorting to a male breast reduction. However, if you are a healthy male with fairly elastic skin, you may be a good candidate for the gynecomastia treatment.
What Kind of Post-Operative Care Can I Expect?
Gynecomastia patients experience some swelling and discomfort after their male breast reduction. Dr. Pecunia can prescribe medication to control any discomfort, and he will provide you with an elastic pressure garment to wear for up to two weeks that should reduce swelling.
While you’re encouraged to walk around immediately following surgery and are permitted to return to work within a few days, you’ll want to refrain from heavy exercise, sexual activity, or anything else that may risk a blow to the chest for a few weeks. Your stitches will be removed within two weeks of your male breast reduction. If you experience any adverse side effects, such as shortness of breath, chest pains, or unusual heartbeat, contact Dr. Pecunia’s office immediately.
What Are the Typical Results of Male Breast Reduction?
Male breast reduction patients are typically very happy with their results. They can now remove their shirts without fear of shame or embarrassment.
